主要内容：this lecture will discuss periodical studies and its recent methodologies as research tools for american studies and american literary studies. special attention will be paid to the importance of periodicals in the print and commodity culture of the united states beginning in the later 19th and early 20thcenturies, giving some history of the technological developments, economic issues, and relationship to developments in consumer culture that made the periodical a major part of american culture well into the 20th century. while exploring what these shifts in media meant for american culture and for issues of identity and consumption, we will also discuss how this earlier shift in media might relate to our current digital culture. the lecture will discuss the rise of periodical studies in american studies and american literary studies and will provide guidance on research methodologies and available digital archives, providing some examples to illustrate key research concerns.
